The advantages of the star seal over the O-ring are as follows

1. The four sealing lips are shaped by several common sections, which do not distort in the groove, so they will not roll in the groove during reciprocating motion.
2. Low friction, because it requires less precompression than the O-ring. Less compression means less friction and wear, and thus a longer life.
3. The sealing effect is very good, because there is a good pressure distribution on the cross section of the star ring, so that a very good sealing effect can be obtained.
4. A lubricating cavity is formed between the seal lips to change the starting condition.
5. Different from the O-ring, its parting flash is in the four concave parts of the cutting surface, that is, between the two sealing lips, and away from the lip position.

At present, X-Ring is not a conventional sealing option. Although it has excellent performance, O-rings can be used instead in most cases, and the unit price and mold cost of O-rings are lower.
